Wrinkles Q & A

Why do I have wrinkles?

Wrinkles form for a number of reasons, including:

  • Sun exposure and UV radiation
  • Repetitive facial movements
  • Loss of collagen in the skin
  • Heredity

In many cases, you can prevent wrinkles from forming by wearing sunscreen daily — even during the winter season — and taking care of your skin by drinking plenty of water and using moisturizer. If you have fine lines and wrinkles that are bothering you and you’ve tried over-the-counter creams and exfoliating products without success, consider laser wrinkle removal.

How does laser wrinkle removal work?

Laser wrinkle removal reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by stimulating cellular turnover and collagen production. The cells on the surface of your skin often lack moisture and may appear dull or rough, in addition to showing signs of aging. By gently heating your skin with the PicoSure® laser, Dr. Burger induces cellular turnover and collagen production.

The deeper cells in your skin absorb light energy from the laser which triggers certain cellular processes that induce tissue formation. The new skin cells that are formed have higher amounts of collagen that give you greater elasticity and smoothness, and replace old, dead skin cells on the surface. This helps to reveal new, fresh, full skin underneath.

What can I expect during a laser wrinkle treatment?

Before your laser wrinkle treatment, Dr. Burger cleans your skin and places a cooling fan in your front your face to reduce any sensations of heat from the laser.

Once you’re ready, you wear protective eyeglasses and Dr. Burger places the handheld laser wand next to your skin. He pulses the laser on and off over the surface of your skin, moving around strategically to treat every area of concern. You may feel a warm sensation or a slight tingle when the laser is turned on.

The entire procedure takes about 15 minutes and you can return to your normal routine immediately afterward. Mild redness and swelling is possible for two to three days following treatment. Depending on the condition of your skin, Dr. Burger may recommend a series of three to six visits to see the best results. In most cases, you’ll notice an immediate improvement in the tightness and fullness of your skin after treatment.*
