Acne Scars Q & A

What causes acne scars?

Acne scars form when a pimple stretches the pores in your skin and breaks down the collagen surrounding the pores. Your body naturally produces new collagen to replace the collagen that was lost; however, your body may produce too much collagen. If too much collagen forms, it can cause your skin to thicken and become darker, turning into a scar.

Acne produces three specific types of scars, including:

  • Hypertrophic scars, also called keloid scars
  • Atrophic scars, also called ice pick and boxcar scars
  • Hyperpigmentation scars

Dr. Burger may recommend laser skin rejuvenation to reduce the appearance of your scars and improve the overall tone and texture of your skin.

How can I get rid of acne scars?

Dr. Burger recommends laser skin rejuvenation with the PicoSure® laser for most types of acne scars. The PicoSure laser produces condensed light energy that penetrates to the deepest layers of your skin and promotes cellular growth.

As your deep skin cells absorb the light energy, receptors in the cell are activated to produce new collagen and replace old skin cells on your skin’s surface. As the old cells are replaced with new cells, your scar fades so you see less discoloration and improved skin texture. The new collagen that is produced adds elasticity to your skin throughout the treatment area, rather than around a single pore, so your skin appears fuller and younger, too.

What happens during a laser skin treatment for scars?

Before beginning your laser treatment, Dr. Burger uses a cooling fan on your skin to further prevent discomfort. When you’re ready, you wear protective eyeglasses and Dr. Burger begins your session.

Dr. Burger places the handheld laser wand over the surface of your skin and moves it smoothly across the treatment area. The laser pulses on and off and you may notice a mild warming or tingling sensation. Generally, the procedure lasts 10-15 minutes.

After your treatment, your skin may be mildly swollen or red. This goes away within a few hours. You’ll likely notice an immediate improvement in the tone and texture of your skin.* Additional sessions may be needed, depending on the severity of your acne scars.
